The Doors

—Break On Through

marksbirch:

METAL MONDAY: Break On Through by The Doors - Now you might be thinking that The Doors are not metal.  Strictly speaking you are probably right, but all the metalheads of the day were Doors fans and had a bigger influence on metal than people acknowledge.  Also, this is a shoutout to Ray Manzarek, the Doors founding member and keyboardist, who passed way today.  Without him and his unique sound, a song like Break on Through would not be the classic it is today.  RIP Ray.

With deference to the genius of David Bowie, here’s Space Oddity, recorded on Station. A last glimpse of the World.

Huge thanks in the making of the video to the talented trio of Emm Gryner, Joe Corcoran and Andrew Tidby, plus Evan Hadfield and all at the CSA.

Dead Kennedys

—California Über Alles

marksbirch:

California Über Alles by Dead KennedysThe Dead Kennedys were one of the earliest and most notable of hardcore punk bands to come out of California.  I first got wind of them when the PMRC targeted the Dead Kennedys who were later indicted on obscenity charges for their album Frankenchrist.  Ever since then I was a fan.  Also it was the first and only time that I ever viewed Oprah to watch Jello Biafra and Tipper Gore lock horns.

California Über Alles was the first single and the song that launched the Dead Kennedys.  I can relate to the song having lived in California and experienced its very screwed up politics and screwball politicians.  Funny how a song about Governor Jerry Brown is as relevant now as it was when the song was first released in 1978.  Anyway, the song itself is excellent, the lyrics pointed and smart, and the aggression visceral which reminds you that there was much more to the band than the theater and controversy.

Great song

Cool name and great pizza. We think we know what’s for dinner now.

I second that - great pizza

Kurt Vile may have written better songs before, but this is his best album to date. It’s an album’s album. It’s the kind of album that other albums listen to.
